Boston University College of Fine Arts offers a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in directing that helps emerging professionals develop their artistic vision and career goals while advancing their technical abilities.
This MFA directing program at BU is tailored to each student's creative talents, areas for growth, and individual aspirations. Students in the School of Theatre's directing program gain hands-on experience through carefully selected projects that challenge and highlight their abilities. They direct multiple SOT productions each season across various venues, with increasing opportunities to collaborate with designers.
The program focuses on nurturing students' unique artistic perspectives, refining their directing skills, and establishing valuable professional connections. Comprehensive schedule featuring visiting artists, specialized workshops, and intensive courses.
Guided career preparation including portfolio development and connections to Professional Theatre Initiative partners for summer positions after the first year.
Qualified students may receive travel grants to observe faculty or industry professionals.
Upon graduation, students receive a professional portfolio and access to theater industry networks.
One-year SDC Society membership awarded upon program completion.
Optional Arts Management or Commercial Theatre Development certificate through BU's Metropolitan College (requires additional application).
This 60-credit program follows a sequential structure and typically spans two years.
