The Physiology & Biophysics Graduate Programs at Boston University's Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine provide comprehensive training for students pursuing MA, PhD, or MD/PhD degrees. These programs emphasize hands-on laboratory experience and innovative research conducted under faculty supervision. Our distinguished faculty, recognized globally for their expertise, represent diverse research interests. We are dedicated to fostering outstanding research while cultivating a new generation of scientists from varied backgrounds who will lead advancements in fundamental and applied biomedical research.
Students can pursue either a PhD or MA in Physiology or Biophysics at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine. Both programs combine rigorous graduate coursework with mentored laboratory research under faculty guidance.
During the initial two years of both PhD and MA programs, students complete a core curriculum in Biomedical Sciences complemented by specialized biophysics and physiology courses. The curriculum allows for personalization, with first-year students conducting research rotations in either 23 (MA) or 34 (PhD) faculty labs to explore different research approaches.
After the first year, students choose their thesis advisor and focus on research for their chosen degree. Second-year students continue coursework, with PhD candidates additionally completing qualifying exams. All students participate in weekly departmental seminars and present their research annually at a dedicated student symposium.
Learning Outcomes
PhD graduates in Physiology or Biophysics from Chobanian & Avedisian SOM will achieve:
