The History Department at Boston University welcomes PhD applicants with undergraduate degrees in history or similar disciplines, outstanding academic achievements, and a focus on African, American, Asian, or European historical studies. Our program equips doctoral candidates to create and implement innovative research projects that yield significant scholarly publications, advancing knowledge within historical studies and specialized areas. Additionally, we train students to excel as educators, capable of teaching diverse historical subjects. We anticipate our graduates will pursue academic careers at research institutions, liberal arts colleges, community colleges, or secure positions in research libraries and archival centers.
Program Objectives
Attain comprehensive expertise in a selected historical specialization and connected disciplines. Candidates must grasp dominant scholarly perspectives, current historiographical developments, and how their research contributes to these conversations.
Acquire familiarity with archival resources relevant to their investigations.
Develop and publicly defend original research suitable for publication.
Maintain ethical standards in all research activities.
Demonstrate teaching proficiency for both undergraduate and graduate courses.
