Students pursuing an MD/PhD must complete all requirements for both medical and doctoral degrees. For application details and the medical school curriculum, prospective students should contact the BU Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine Admissions office.
The PhD portion combines classroom learning with biomedical research to equip graduates for professional growth. Beyond coursework, participants complete rotations in multiple research labs to identify a suitable dissertation advisor. They then enroll in their mentor's affiliated department to pursue advanced doctoral studies.
Required coursework features the Foundations in Biomedical Sciences series, covering biochemistry, cellular biology, molecular biology, and genetics. The program coordinates with medical school classes that share content with PhD courses. Students also take classes in research methods, statistical analysis, and specialized electives.
