The Chemistry Teaching major is a collaborative program with Wheelock College of Education & Human Development, equipping students to teach chemistry at secondary school levels. This comprehensive program covers all fundamental chemistry areas while incorporating essential secondary education coursework and hands-on teaching practice for certification. Degree candidates may need to complete up to 144 credit units to earn their BA. Both the Chemistry Department and Wheelock College recommend that aspiring high school educators first complete the Chemistry major before pursuing a Wheelock master's degree for optimal career preparation.
Program Objectives
Graduates will:
Achieve proficiency in general chemistry fundamentals to progress into specialized chemistry disciplines (inorganic, organic, biochemistry, physical chemistry).
Develop competence in applying theoretical and experimental chemical principles across all chemistry subfields.
Acquire skills to synthesize knowledge for assessing scientific research and designing experiments to solve unanswered questions in chemical and life sciences.
Master computer applications for data collection, processing, and analysis using specialized software tools.
