The College of Arts & Sciences (CAS) has discontinued enrollment for the Chemistry: Biochemistry major. Current students pursuing this degree should be aware of the following program requirements.
The Chemistry: Biochemistry program is structured to address the academic and investigative interests of students focused on biochemical sciences and biological chemistry/chemical biology. Similar to the general Chemistry major, it emphasizes developing research abilities through foundational coursework spanning key chemistry disciplines, providing an intellectual base for biochemistry studies. The program also actively promotes biochemical research engagement. Graduates with this specialization are particularly well-equipped for advanced studies and careers in chemical research, education, biochemical industries, or regulatory bodies. For premedical students, this track offers outstanding preparation for medical school and related healthcare professions.
Program Objectives
Students will:
Achieve comprehensive understanding of core chemistry principles to progress into specialized chemistry areas (inorganic, organic, biochemistry, physical chemistry).
Utilize essential chemistry theories within their chosen field of study.
Develop both conceptual understanding and practical laboratory techniques.
Gain proficiency in experimental methods, including instrument operation, data interpretation, and scientific reporting.
