The African American & Black Diaspora Studies program examines Black communities worldwide, with special emphasis on populations in the United States, the Caribbean, Latin America, and the Atlantic region. This interdisciplinary approach offers comprehensive insights into Black experiences, cultural expressions, historical trajectories, the evolution of racial ideologies, contemporary societal roles, intellectual traditions, political movements, and the intersections of race with gender, sexuality, class, and nationality across different eras. The curriculum allows students to customize their studies according to individual interests, whether concentrating on specific aspects of Black experiences or exploring broader transnational and historical themes.
Students pursuing African American & Black Diaspora Studies develop theoretical frameworks suitable for advanced academic pursuits while gaining practical knowledge applicable to diverse professions including legal practice, media, advocacy, and community-oriented positions in arts and public policy. The program equips all participants with critical perspectives to engage effectively in a global society shaped by racial dynamics and intercultural exchanges.
Learning Outcomes
