The M.S. program combines academic coursework with a thesis requiring original research. Students work with their faculty advisory committee to design a personalized curriculum that aligns with their educational background, career aspirations, and research interests. Similar to the Ph.D. track, this program expects incoming students to possess fundamental undergraduate knowledge in geosciences. Those without this foundation may need to complete undergraduate-level courses either before or during their graduate studies.

Prospective geology and geophysics master's students should have completed two semesters (or equivalent) of college-level physics or chemistry prior to admission, and must fulfill a two-semester calculus requirement before graduation. The program encourages interdisciplinary learning, recommending coursework across geology, geophysics, environmental geosciences, and related scientific and mathematical disciplines. This multidisciplinary approach proves especially valuable for students targeting careers in industry.

Emphasizing both earth science fundamentals and research capabilities, the program equips graduates for professional roles in environmental consulting, engineering, natural resource exploration, government agencies, or further doctoral studies. A key advantage of the M.S. program is its integration of geology, geophysics, and environmental studies, allowing students to develop comprehensive expertise.
