This two-year program consists of ten courses (30 credits total), with students selecting three classes each semester. Participants must complete at least one course in three out of the four Political Science disciplines: American Politics, Comparative Politics, International Politics, and Political Theory.
Students may enroll in two courses outside their primary department. Program completion requires passing a comprehensive exam covering two subfields. Alternatively, those opting to write a thesis only need to complete eight courses and are exempt from the comprehensive exam. Another option is Advanced Directive Study (ADS), where students work with a faculty advisor to develop a substantial final paper based on previous seminar work, serving as an alternative to both the thesis and comprehensive exam.
Students must have a bachelor's degree and undergraduate course work in calculus, physics, biochemistry, biology and chemistry, including organic chemistry. Applicants whose native language is not English must achieve a TOEFL score of 600 or better (paper-based test), or 250 or better in (computer-based test).
