Boston College's Economics Department brings together a vibrant international community of scholars tackling critical 21st-century economic and social challenges through applied and theoretical research. Our PhD program prepares students for academic and research careers by delivering rigorous training in economic theory, quantitative methods, and applied economics.
This full-time doctoral program requires coursework, comprehensive exams, a dissertation, and one year of residency. With 32 full-time faculty members and approximately 16 new PhD candidates admitted annually, we maintain an ideal balance - offering diverse course options while ensuring personalized attention for each student.
Recognized as a STEM program (CIP Code 45.0603: Econometrics and Quantitative Economics), our PhD qualifies graduates for the 24-month STEM extension of F1 Optional Practical Training (OPT).
