Public relations is a dynamic profession that blends various media-focused roles. The program equips students with comprehensive knowledge of the PR process, covering research, strategy development, communication techniques, assessment methods, multimedia integration, and contemporary societal applications.
Throughout their studies, PR students develop crucial abilities in analytical thinking, ethical decision-making, and creative problem-solving. These foundational skills merge with practical competencies like professional writing, strategic planning, and understanding evolving media landscapes within the coursework.
Auburn's PR program emphasizes experiential learning through its innovative service-learning approach. Students collaborate in teams with local organizations across multiple courses, gaining practical experience while completing academic requirements. The curriculum also mandates an internship, providing valuable workplace exposure and professional connections.
The PRSSA/PRCA student organization offers numerous engagement opportunities, hosting annual events like Pups and Pops (benefitting animal welfare), PR workshops for campus groups, and networking sessions with industry experts. Regular guest speaker events and a mentorship initiative with the Public Relations Advisory Council further enhance student development. The program maintains strong ties with the East Alabama PRCA chapter for collaborative programming.
For hands-on experience, students can join The Oaks Agency, the department's student-run firm. Participants manage real client projects, developing expertise in account services, digital media, creative design, event coordination, and photography. Past partnerships include Southern Crossing, Toomer's Drugs, and various local businesses, with recruitment occurring each semester.
