Patent law plays a crucial role in safeguarding and bringing inventions, concepts, and methodologies to market. The Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law at Arizona State University provides JD and LLM candidates with specialized training in patent practice, along with an MLS degree option in this field. Currently, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) permits individuals without law degrees to take the patent bar examination. Those holding undergraduate degrees in engineering or physical sciences can prepare and file patent applications after passing this exam and registering as patent agents. Various legal practices, businesses, and startups require both attorneys and non-attorneys to oversee patent-related procedures.
