The rule of law and effective governance are vital foundations for a nation's political stability and economic growth. Building accountable, democratic, and adaptive legal and governmental frameworks in vulnerable regions is crucial for safeguarding citizens' basic rights and addressing pressing global security, economic, and environmental issues.
The International Rule of Law and Security (IRLS) program at the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law, created in collaboration with the McCain Institute for International Leadership, offers both academic study and hands-on training to equip students for careers advancing justice, sound governance, human rights, and security both domestically and internationally. With locations in Washington, D.C. and Phoenix, AZ, the IRLS curriculum explores establishing legal systems and governance in fragile and post-conflict nations, along with contemporary security challenges like terrorism. This program trains students for diverse legal, policy, and development roles in these critical areas.
