The PhD in global health is built on the idea that lasting and meaningful solutions to critical worldwide health issues demand a deep grasp of how cultural factors, societal and environmental dynamics, and disease interconnect.

This program prepares individuals aiming for careers in cross-disciplinary academic environments, medical education institutions, or non-academic health sectors including corporate industries, government bodies, and NGOs.

The interdisciplinary graduate curriculum provides comprehensive training in advanced health social science research theories and methodologies. It capitalizes on ASU's strong medical anthropology resources, including 15 specialized faculty members, while also incorporating expertise from related disciplines like medical sociology, population studies, spatial health analysis, and disease pattern research.

Key program themes include biocultural adaptation strategies, computational modeling of complex systems, cultural influences on wellness, health challenges in the Americas, indigenous community health, statistical disease tracking, food culture studies, equity for marginalized groups, community relationship networks, and metropolitan/ecological health concerns.
