The Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences with a focus on Healthy Lifestyles and Fitness Science is an engaging program combining diverse academic studies, practical experience, and comprehensive education in wellness principles. Students develop specialized knowledge in nutrition, exercise science, stress reduction, addiction prevention, behavioral modification, health coaching, and wellness program administration.
Upon graduation, students are equipped to positively influence individual and community health outcomes while tackling health disparities rooted in social factors.
The program features three specialized pathways designed to prepare students for professional certifications:
Fitness Science: This track teaches students to evaluate clients and create customized exercise regimens while adapting programs to optimize health benefits. Courses cover activity planning, exercise recommendations, body positivity, and injury prevention. Completing this pathway qualifies students for ACSM's personal trainer certification (https://www.acsm.org).
Health Education and Promotion: Students learn to identify health requirements and design, implement, and assess community wellness initiatives. Focus areas include diabetes management, reproductive health, environmental health impacts, crisis response, digital health communication, youth wellness, and conflict resolution. Graduates meet qualifications for the CHES examination administered by NCHEC (https://www.nchec.org).
Health and Wellness Coaching: This concentration explores coaching techniques for sustainable wellbeing improvements. Curriculum covers proven behavior change approaches, advanced communication strategies like motivational interviewing, and methods for fostering lasting healthy habits. Completion prepares students for ACE's wellness coach certification (https://www.acefitness.org). Additionally, students taking one supplementary course qualify for NBHWC credentialing (https://nbhwc.org).
