Industrial engineering involves creating, enhancing, implementing, and managing interconnected systems of personnel, resources, data, machinery, and energy to identify the most effective methods for producing goods or delivering services. It utilizes specialized expertise from mathematical, physical, and social sciences, along with engineering analysis and design techniques.
The BSE program in industrial engineering incorporates some business fundamentals but focuses on applying mathematics and information technology to develop models that describe, analyze, and improve system efficiency. Depending on the specialization and context, industrial engineering may also be referred to as operations management, management science, operations research, systems engineering, or manufacturing engineering.
