Our team conducts diverse empirical studies aimed at enhancing and guiding the quality of nursing and midwifery care within the NHS and other healthcare settings. Our research encompasses investigations into patient experiences, assessments of healthcare interventions, advancements in clinical practice (including specialized roles), and studies focused on expectant mothers, newborns, families, and caregivers. We also pursue methodological research, particularly in qualitative evidence synthesis. Current priority areas in our nursing and midwifery research include:
Men's health
End-of-life care
Specialized clinical roles
Education and teaching methodologies
Obstetric and maternal healthcare services.
Additionally, our research intersects with broader themes that connect nursing/midwifery with other departmental focus areas such as oncology, psychological health, community health initiatives, cardiovascular recovery programs, and clinical trial assessments.
Our faculty of nursing and midwifery educators actively participates in academic pursuits to integrate cutting-edge research findings into our curriculum. Notable researchers in our department include:
Dr. Rob Allison, Senior Lecturer: His scholarly work examines personal and family experiences with auditory hallucinations (and psychotic disorders), involuntary mental health treatments, strategies for increasing autonomy among psychiatric medication users, developing more effective nurse-patient engagement methods for mental health services, and addressing power dynamics within psychiatric care systems.
