Our research shapes policies and services for mental health and addiction, especially within the NHS. We combine insights from population studies, clinical practice, behavioral science, economics, environmental factors, and other scientific approaches. Collaborating closely with individuals affected by addiction or mental health challenges, we emphasize prevention, early intervention, and examining these issues throughout people's lives.
MHARG excels in conducting evidence reviews and large-scale randomized controlled trials that guide NHS policies. We partner with the York Trials Unit and the Cochrane Common Mental Disorders Group. Leading collaborative research across Yorkshire and Humberside (population 6.2 million) through the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration (ARC), we enable impactful, large-scale studies with NHS partners.
Our research extends globally, with strong ties to South Asia via the NIHR IMPACT Global Health Research program.
Based in the University of York's Department of Health Sciences, MHARG benefits from support by Hull York Medical School (HYMS). Our team includes approximately 75 researchers, academics, and support staff. Explore our core research themes for more details about our focus areas.
