Forensic speech science applies linguistic, phonetic, signal processing, and computational techniques to legal investigations. This field encompasses various tasks: matching voices between unidentified offenders and known suspects, identifying geographic and social origins of unknown perpetrators when no suspect is available, clarifying disputed speech content, creating written transcripts, and verifying/improving audio quality. This program supports advanced, evolving research in forensic speech science. You'll join an esteemed research network with outstanding recognition and have the chance to contribute meaningfully to the discipline. Our collaborative approach spans multiple academic departments, ensuring York's research environment fosters interdisciplinary work. During your initial year, you'll present a 2000-word project overview, followed by a more detailed 5000-8000 word report in year two. Your final year represents the pinnacle of your research, culminating in an 80,000-100,000 word dissertation.
At least a merit (or equivalent) at masters level in a relevant discipline (e.g. linguistics, audio engineering, psychology, or computer science), as well as our standard English language requirements. IELTS: 7.0, with no less than 6.5 in each component
