York University's archaeology research spans diverse specializations, including human origins, prehistoric cultures, Roman through medieval periods, historical and field archaeology, biological archaeology, digital methods, African studies, conservation of built heritage, and experimental approaches to artifacts. Much of our work crosses disciplinary boundaries, fostering partnerships with experts across multiple fields.
Teamwork is fundamental to our approach. We actively contribute to global scholarly networks while influencing policy discussions and public understanding. The PhD program culminates in a 90,000-word thesis, while the MPhil in Archaeology requires a 60,000-word dissertation.
