Gain expert-level instruction in examining human skeletal remains and associated burial sites to develop profound insights into ancient individuals and communities.
In specialized laboratory settings, you'll receive comprehensive training in human remains analysis. Through intensive anatomy sessions utilizing plastinated specimens (preserved human limbs and anatomical parts), you'll achieve an in-depth knowledge of both skeletal and soft tissue structures. Seminar discussions on mortuary archaeology, covering subjects like early hominin interments, interpreting burial evidence, and examining traces of funeral ceremonies, provide crucial contextual understanding.
As part of an active research environment, you'll cultivate essential abilities in research design and statistical interpretation. These competencies will be applied during summer months for an innovative, self-directed research endeavor (the thesis project).
Alumni from this program have advanced to positions in academic research, professional archaeology, cultural heritage preservation, and museum curation. Numerous graduates continue to doctoral studies.
