Our Master of Arts in Music (research-based) is perfect for students who want to pursue independent study through a research project, with expert supervision in their selected field. This program caters to those aiming to explore and articulate their insights into specific performance practice areas, either through a written thesis or a performance accompanied by analysis.
Candidates can submit a 30,000 to 40,000-word dissertation examining their approved topic, offering new perspectives on established performance practices using primary sources. Performance-based submissions consist of recorded performances paired with an analytical commentary. This written component highlights the research within the practice, examining compositional techniques and positioning the work within a scholarly framework. In some cases, submitting critical or performance editions of the discussed music may be appropriate.
