The MA in Music (by research) is perfect for students who want to pursue independent study through a research project while receiving expert guidance in their chosen field. This program emphasizes the exploration or application of musical processes centered on improvisation, requiring students to show a solid grasp of improvisational practices related to their focus area. We welcome both theoretical and practical approaches equally and support interdisciplinary research proposals.
Our archives contain valuable resources for jazz and improvised music research, such as the JRT Davies collection of pre-1950s jazz (primarily on 78rpm records) and the ECM Records collection. Students benefit from personalized coaching and workshops led by members of the Julian Argelles Octet and other guest artists. The University Jazz Orchestra serves as an essential resource for practical work, alongside the CMRC's recording and rehearsal facilities.
