The Westminster School of Arts houses the Centre for Research and Education in Art and Media (CREAM), recognized as one of the UK's most accomplished and top-ranked arts research institutions. During the 2014 Research Exercise Framework, CREAM received the highest evaluation among all institutions for diverse art and design research, with 45% of its work considered world-class and 63% recognized for exceptional global impact.
CREAM's research spans multiple creative fields including ceramics, visual arts, photography, cinema, experimental media, music, and fashion. With 30 researchers and more than 50 doctoral candidates, it stands as London's premier research hub for visual/media arts, design, and music, ranking among the UK's top six centers. Nearly 50% of CREAM's PhD candidates pursue practice-led research degrees.
Doctoral researchers at CREAM become part of a vibrant academic community, engaging in seminar series, guest lectures, innovative conferences, and collaborative symposiums with partner institutions. CREAM has played a pivotal role in shaping discussions around practice-led research in audiovisual media and was a co-founder of the AHRC-supported AVPhD initiative.
