Our adaptable Modern Languages and Linguistics (BA) program lets you develop comprehensive expertise in either one language and its cultural context, or study two languages while examining language's societal aspects.
This combined degree equally balances Modern Languages and Linguistics. You'll master either a single language and its culture or two languages, while investigating language acquisition and its social dimensions.

The program offers two distinct pathways:
Pathway one (single language) focuses on one language and its cultural context.
Pathway two (dual languages) concentrates on two languages.

Both options allow you to dedicate half your studies to the Centre for Applied Linguistics.
Pathway one offers these language choices: French, German, Italian, or Spanish. You can select cultural modules tied to your chosen language or from various thematic options across the School.
Pathway two requires choosing a primary language (French, German, Italian, or Spanish) and a secondary language from: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, or Spanish.
For both pathways, you'll typically spend your second or third year abroad strengthening your skills. Dual language students can divide this year between both languages.

Program Length
4 years full-time, usually including a year abroad
