Our department provides research supervision across diverse subfields of English language and linguistics. We accept projects examining any English variety and can oversee the study and interpretation of multiple languages. We especially encourage applications focusing on: descriptive grammar (including typological perspectives) and/or theoretical syntax, discourse studies (particularly political and media discourse, identity discourse, corpus-based approaches), linguistic variation and evolution, morphology, phonology, writing systems, pragmatics (encompassing intercultural communication and im/politeness), meaning studies, vocabulary research, dictionary-making, and stylistic analysis.

Qualification Requirements
Degree requirements: You’re normally expected to have a Merit (an average of 60% overall) in a Master’s degree. Subject-specific requirements: Your qualification should be in English language or linguistics or a related subject area. You may also be considered for the degree if you have other professional qualifications or experience of equivalent standing. English Language Requirements: IELTS (Academic) Advanced level (7.0 overall, including at least 6.5 in each component); TOEFL (iBT) - Advanced level 95 overall, including at least 22 in Listening, 23 in Reading, 23 in Speaking, 24 in Writing.
