Sussex is renowned for its distinguished research legacy in gender studies, spanning diverse areas from trans activism to pro-anorexia online communities, and from LGBTQ family dynamics to homonationalism. Our postgraduate researchers pursue innovative work at the forefront of these fields. The humanities pathway in Gender Studies allows you to investigate cultural, social, and political dimensions of the discipline. With support from our experienced faculty, you can undertake research across various themes: identity formations and subcultures, representational politics in culture, spatial cultural studies, digital platforms, LGBT/queer scholarship, and gendered cultural expressions. We offer both PhD and MPhil programs, which vary in scope and duration. A PhD requires significant original contributions to your field of study, while an MPhil involves independent research with a narrower focus, culminating in a Master of Philosophy degree. Students may have the option to transition from an MPhil to a PhD during their studies.
