Our Master of Arts in Medical Ethics & Law examines the legal and ethical dilemmas arising in healthcare. Key topics explored include: informed consent for adults; treatment decisions for incapacitated patients; professional responsibilities regarding treatment and transparency; pediatric care; adolescent treatment choices; reproductive rights and termination; end-of-life decisions including assisted dying; organ transplantation; mental health ethics and legislation; criminal law's intersection with mental health; individual rights versus public health; resource allocation; reproductive ethics; disability considerations; global health ethics; and body politics. The Medical Law specialization concentrates on legal dimensions of these topics, with optional ethics coursework available.Program HighlightsCutting-edge legal and ethical research applied to diverse scientific and medical challenges. The Medical Law program primarily emphasizes legal perspectives.We address contentious matters like abortion and end-of-life care with rigorous, objective analysis.Small seminar-style classes (typically under 30 students) foster engaged learning and discussion.Backed by the pioneering UK Centre for Medical Law & Ethics, featuring faculty actively shaping policy through their research.Career ProspectsGraduates frequently secure policy positions at organizations including the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority, Human Tissue Authority, Nuffield Council on Bioethics, and Department of Health and Social Care. Alumni have also joined the BMA Ethics Department, GMC, Progress Educational Trust, British Pregnancy Advisory Service, King's Fund, and medical defense organizations. Many pursue doctoral studies.
Standard requirements: A minimum 2:1 undergraduate Bachelor’s (honours) degree. If you have a lower degree classification, or a degree in an unrelated subject, your application may be considered if you can demonstrate significant relevant work experience, or offer a related graduate qualification (such as a Masters or PGDip).
Programme-Specific Requirements: 2:1 undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline, e.g. law, medicine, philosophy, theology, social science, one of the life sciences, dentistry or nursing studies.  Alternative qualifications:Evidence of achievement of an academic level comparable to at least upper second class honours standard through past studies and where previous study, work or experience has made the applicant a suitable candidate, will also be considered. Students can demonstrate their English Language Proficiency with the following tests and grades: IELTS (Academic): 7.0 overall with a minimum of 6.5 in each skill; TOEFL iBT: 100 overall with a minimum of 25 in writing and 23 in each of the other skills.
