BSMS offers joint PhD and MD degrees conferred by both the University of Sussex and the University of Brighton. Our research encompasses everything from fundamental scientific inquiry to clinical studies, medical ethics, and social sciences, providing postgraduate students with diverse and stimulating opportunities.

Our research programs equip students with advanced skills for working with innovative technologies in health and biomedical science fields. Graduates from our PhD and MD programs have pursued careers as clinical academics, joined biomedical companies, or continued their academic journey as postdoctoral researchers.

A key advantage of studying at BSMS is our interdisciplinary approach, allowing students to collaborate with both basic science academics and practicing clinicians. Supervision typically comes from BSMS faculty, academic staff at either university, or NHS clinicians.

Students benefit from access to researcher development programs at both institutions, along with state-of-the-art facilities and equipment available at the universities and NHS research labs.
