Brighton, home to Britain's first dedicated movie theater and a vibrant cultural scene, provides an ideal setting for film studies. Our department maintains strong ties with regional film festivals like Cinecity and local cinemas. At Sussex, you can:
analyze everything from Hollywood hits to global independent films and modern TV series
examine diverse genres spanning documentaries, protest films, musicals, and youth cinema
study worldwide cinematic traditions, including Chinese and Latin American film industries
challenge portrayals of identity, ethnicity, and sexual orientation
analyze depictions of social upheaval and human migration
investigate literary adaptations and popular music in film.
You'll develop hands-on film production abilities, including scriptwriting techniques, and can pursue original research projects.
