Our postgraduate offerings include MPhil, PhD, Engineering Doctorate (EngD), and Industrial Doctorate programs, all part of our Doctoral Programme that aligns with the core research focuses of our two interdisciplinary Institutes:
Institute for Energy & Environment
Institute for Sensors, Signals & Communications
MPhil & PhD
Applications for our one-year MPhil or three-year PhD programs are accepted year-round. You may propose your own research topic or choose from our curated list of predefined PGR projects within our Institutes.
All PhD candidates automatically join the Postgraduate Certificate in Researcher Professional Development (PgCert RPD). This program enhances essential skills for both academic and career success:
- Research expertise and critical thinking abilities
- Personal attributes for research excellence and professional growth
- Ethical standards and professional conduct in your field
- Collaborative skills and effective research communication to diverse audiences
The certificate requires you to integrate these developmental activities with your PhD studies while maintaining reflective documentation of your progress.
EngD
We provide EngD programs in two specialized areas:
- Optics and Photonics Technologies
- Non-Destructive Evaluation
These collaborative programs involve multiple UK universities, so application portals may redirect you to partner institutions. Applications are accepted throughout the year. Note that EngD students are exempt from the PgCert RPD requirement.
Industrial Doctorate
The Industrial Doctorate enables working professionals to earn a PhD through a three-year, company-based research initiative. This program addresses real-world challenges faced by your employer, delivering actionable insights to drive organizational advancement.
You'll need a first-class or upper second-class UK Honours degree, or overseas equivalent, in a relevant engineering, physical sciences or technology-based discipline from a recognised academic institution.
