The PhD program, available in Psychology or Neuroscience, is a research-focused degree typically completed in 3 years (or 6 years part-time). Students work under the guidance of one or more faculty members from the School, culminating in a thesis of up to 80,000 words and an oral defense (viva). The School of Psychology and Neuroscience provides both PhD and MSc research programs. Studies in these fields generally align with four primary research themes: cellular and developmental neuroscience, origins of mind, perception/cognition/action, and social/group processes. Investigators examine diverse cognitive and perceptual functions, striving to develop comprehensive models of behavior and cognition. Their research explores questions such as how sensory information is perceived and interpreted, the architecture of decision-making and memory systems, and neural mechanisms underlying action. Methodologies include human imaging, behavioral experiments, and other empirical approaches.
