St Andrews University has recently launched the Masters of Studies by Research (MSt (Res)), a new research-focused Master's program. This one-year degree (extended to two years for eligible part-time students) requires candidates to complete a thesis of maximum 30,000 words. The MSt (Res) offers students the chance to engage in a shorter research period, either as an independent qualification or as groundwork for doctoral studies.
Typically, applicants need a strong Master's degree in the relevant field for research program admission, and this requirement generally applies to the MSt (Res) as well. However, the History School may consider exceptional candidates without a Master's degree if they meet specific criteria: holding a first-class undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in the discipline, demonstrating robust research capabilities, and submitting an outstanding writing sample and research proposal.
