The Master of Science in Marine Mammal Science equips students with the skills needed for careers in marine mammal research and conservation. This unique program stands as the sole research-intensive Masters degree globally specializing in this field, delivered by top specialists from the Sea Mammal Research Unit and the Scottish Oceans Institute. This one-year postgraduate course, offered by the Sea Mammal Research Unit (SMRU) - the UK's sole institution entirely devoted to marine mammal studies - leverages the University of St Andrews' quantitative and interdisciplinary strengths through the Scottish Oceans Institute (SOI). While centered on marine mammals, the curriculum delves into advanced concepts in quantitative marine ecology and animal behavior. Course components feature rigorous instruction in analytical methods (such as statistical modeling and geographic information systems) and practical research approaches, incorporating a field-based survey techniques course (covered by tuition fees). Participants may undertake Antarctic fieldwork through an optional polar ecology module (subject to a significant additional expedition fee). Explore student experiences via the Antarctic expedition blog. Foundational studies are enhanced by specialized electives in cutting-edge research domains like biologging, marine acoustics, behavioral studies, and population dynamics. The program emphasizes interactive, hands-on learning in intimate classroom settings.
Full-time duration: 12 months.
