This Master of Science program is a full-time, one-year curriculum comprising 9 months of taught modules and 3 months dedicated to a research project, evaluated through coursework and examinations. The program offers comprehensive theoretical and practical instruction in measuring, quantifying, and analyzing physical processes within marine geological systems. It establishes a robust scientific foundation for designing and conducting marine surveys—whether geophysical, sedimentological, or geological—to meet specific objectives. The MSc in Applied Marine Geoscience builds upon its forerunner, the Marine Geotechnics course, which had a distinguished 30-year history. A carefully structured series of modules explores the formative processes and characteristics of diverse sedimentary environments, spanning coastal zones to deep-sea regions. These processes are influenced by interconnected dynamic, chemical, climatic, and geological factors. Students also acquire expertise in survey methodologies to map these environments, enhancing their comprehension of the forces that mold them. The program culminates with an examination of how sedimentary materials respond to external loads—their geotechnical properties. Historically, graduates have secured positions in offshore hydrocarbon exploration, geophysical surveying firms (both marine and land-based), geotechnical engineering companies, port authorities, and government agencies. Additionally, the program serves as a pathway to advanced academic research opportunities.
Successful applicants normally hold, or expect to obtain, a 2(ii) undergraduate Honours degree in a physical, geophysical, engineering or other numerate subject area. Applicants from other science (BSc) subject areas (e.g. geography, geology, environmental science, marine science, or archaeology) or with relevant employment experience are encouraged to apply, provided that they can demonstrate high levels of motivation and experience in their Personal Statement and CV. IELTS: 6.0 (with no element below 5.5) is required. TOEFL 75 Overall.
