As a French MA (Hons) student, you'll refine your language and communication abilities to an advanced level by exploring French and Francophone linguistics, literature, and cultural studies. The program offers engagement with various research-focused specializations spanning medieval to contemporary literature, French political culture, performance studies, intellectual history, postcolonial theories, gender studies, film adaptations, modern French philosophy, creative writing, and translation studies. This four or five-year program, administered by the School of Modern Languages, begins with foundational French studies in the first two years, enhancing your reading, listening, speaking, writing, and translation competencies. During your first year, you'll select two supplementary subjects alongside French, typically continuing with at least one into your second year. Learn more about the academic year structure. Your third year presents the option to study at a French partner university, substituting equivalent coursework at St Andrews, though this international study remains optional. Alternatively, you may opt for an integrated year abroad before completing two final Honours years.
