This four-year undergraduate program is designed to cultivate students' understanding and appreciation of Dutch culture, both historically and in modern times. The curriculum offers diverse course options spanning literature, linguistics, history, sociology, philosophy, visual arts, cinema, and various cultural aspects related to the language(s) studied. The Dutch Bachelor's program spans four years as a single-subject degree, with students completing 120 credits annually. Language courses emphasize practical proficiency, while cultural studies explore identity, community, and contemporary cultural analysis. Beyond required courses, students can select electives in literary studies, historical research, and sociolinguistics, examining cultural trends and interdisciplinary approaches.
The program concentrates on the language, heritage, and historical development of the Netherlands and Flanders - key UK trading partners. Dutch serves as an official language in Suriname and shares significant mutual intelligibility with Afrikaans, a prominent South African language.
