As an MA (Hons) French student, you'll refine your language and communication abilities to an advanced level. The program offers exploration of specialized subjects such as French linguistics, literature, cultural studies, history, political science, and cinema. In your third year, you can participate in study abroad opportunities at one of the University's Erasmus partner institutions in France. Those who undertake a year overseas gain not only practical teaching experience but also enhance their language proficiency, cross-cultural understanding, and personal growth. The MA (Hons) in French also offers a five-year variant incorporating a mandatory year abroad. This integrated international year allows students to work in a Francophone nation between their second and third academic years. The curriculum involves advanced, research-focused study of both French and German, fostering comprehension of knowledge creation and development. The program cultivates independent scholarship characterized by inquisitiveness, precision, academic integrity, and thoroughness. This 60-month course culminates in a Master of Arts (Honours) degree. Like all St Andrews programs, it comprises credit-bearing modules requiring 540 credits total, typically 120 credits per year. Initial years combine program-specific core modules with elective options (potentially including interdisciplinary selections), while later years focus on specialized, research-driven coursework.
