The MA (Hons) in Art History equips students to thoughtfully evaluate diverse artworks while developing strong visual and verbal communication skills. This program primarily examines painting, sculpture, and architecture while also covering applied arts, graphic design, performance art, and photography. Throughout the degree, students master techniques for assessing artistic style, content, meaning, and theoretical foundations while employing various critical lenses to uncover both overt and subtle concepts within artworks. This four-year program, offered by the School of Art History, integrates elements of economic, social, and political history alongside literature, philosophy, and psychology to provide comprehensive analytical frameworks. First-year studies focus on two key areas: European and global medieval/Renaissance art - emphasizing its sociopolitical and religious contexts - and 17th-18th century European art and architecture, exploring technological innovations, expanding viewership, and colonial influences.
