Our four-year BA in Philosophy and Literature (including a foundation year) is designed to help you build expertise in these subjects while enhancing your academic abilities. The foundation year (Year Zero) provides comprehensive preparation in key areas, setting you up for three subsequent years of undergraduate studies at Essex. For those interested, we offer a five-year option that includes a year of study abroad during the fourth year.
This program begins with Year Zero, followed by three or four additional years, depending on whether you opt for the international study opportunity. In Year Zero, you'll explore three subjects related to your degree alongside a core academic skills module, with extra English language support available for non-native speakers.
Upon successfully completing Year Zero through our Essex Pathways Department, you'll advance to the School of Philosophical, Historical, and Interdisciplinary Studies to finish your degree.
At Essex, you'll have the opportunity to engage with both literature and philosophy, examining the fascinating intersections between these two dynamic fields. Our curriculum is broad and adaptable, covering diverse philosophical traditions and English literature across various genres and eras. A key emphasis is placed on the connections between philosophy and literary studies.
