The MA (Hons) in Ancient History is a four-year program offered by the School of Classics. No prior knowledge of ancient history or classical languages is needed in the first year, making it accessible to all students. The curriculum explores the ancient Greek world from the 8th century BCE through Alexander the Great's era, while Roman history is examined from its origins to Emperor Augustus' reign. Coursework covers political, social, and archaeological dimensions of these foundational civilizations that significantly influenced later European culture. This degree involves advanced, research-focused study of Ancient History and Greek, helping students comprehend how academic knowledge evolves and expands. The program fosters independent scholarship characterized by curiosity, precision, and academic rigor. Spanning 48 months, it culminates in a Master of Arts (Honours) degree. Like all St Andrews programs, it comprises credit-bearing modules requiring 480 total credits (typically 120 per year). The initial two years combine core program requirements with elective options (sometimes including cross-faculty courses), while subsequent years focus on specialized, research-driven advanced studies.
