The MA (Hons) in Ancient History delves into the civilizations of Greece and Rome, along with adjacent cultures like the Persians and Carthaginians. This program examines historical developments from the emergence of Greek writing and urban societies in the 8th century BCE to the fall of the Western Roman Empire in the 5th century CE. Geographically, the focus spans the Mediterranean region, occasionally reaching from the Persian Gulf to Scotland and from the Crimean Peninsula to the Sahara Desert. The curriculum covers not just political and military narratives but also explores themes including gender studies, ancient slavery, colonial expansion, religious practices, cross-cultural interactions, and the environmental and economic aspects of Mediterranean antiquity. Learners will additionally analyze ancient source materials and investigate how Greek and Roman societies interpreted and reshaped their historical narratives over time.
