The MA (Hons) in Classics is a four-year program offered by the School of Classics. This degree welcomes students regardless of their prior experience with Latin or Greek. Beginners can enroll in introductory courses for either language, designed to establish fundamental skills rapidly, enabling students to engage confidently with classical texts. For those with existing language proficiency, first-year studies focus on advanced language and literature modules that combine textual analysis with translation practice.
During the second year, all students join unified modules that deepen their understanding of Latin and Greek literature across historical periods, from ancient to late antiquity, while further developing language proficiency for advanced study. Beginners starting both languages simultaneously may choose to postpone one language until their second year. These students then take tailored third-year modules that combine final language acquisition with honors-level literary studies.
