The MA (Hons) in Ancient History delves into the civilizations of Greece and Rome, along with neighboring cultures like the Persians and Carthaginians. This program examines the era spanning from the emergence of Greek writing and urbanization in the 8th century BCE to the fall of the western Roman empire in the 5th century CE. Geographically, the focus lies on the Mediterranean region, occasionally extending from the Persian Gulf to Scotland and from Crimea to the Sahara.
The curriculum covers not just political and military history, but also explores themes including gender studies, ancient slavery, colonization processes, religious practices, cross-cultural interactions, and the ecological and economic systems of the classical world. Learners will additionally investigate historical sources, analyzing how Greek and Roman societies interpreted and reshaped their past to suit evolving circumstances.
