The A990 is a six-year medical program exclusively for Canadian citizens or permanent residents classified as international students for tuition. This pathway is tailored for those planning to pursue postgraduate medical training in Canada. It offers a faster route to medical qualification compared to studying in Canada or the United States.

A990 students benefit from a distinctive structure: they earn a BSc Honours in Medicine from St Andrews in three years, then transfer to Edinburgh Medical School to complete their MD training (MBChB degree). The program includes support for securing Canadian residency placements for postgraduate specialization.

This curriculum delivers a robust scientific base for clinical work, cultivates ethical reasoning abilities, and offers early hands-on clinical exposure within a nurturing academic setting.

Qualification Requirements

Undergraduates on courses other than Medicine who are in first year of an undergraduate programme will be considered if they have fulfilled the School's academic entry requirements before they began their undergraduate course. They must apply by the deadline of 15 October (first semester of first undergraduate year) and have sat the UCAT that year.

The School will not consider applicants who have progressed to second year. Meeting minimum entry requirements will not guarantee an offer grades will have to be competitive within the applicant pool of the given year. No credit for the undergraduate year is given as all entrants must complete the full six years of the medical degree.

Applicants must have achieved (or be predicted to achieve) the following grades:

Standard entry grades: 38 points (HL 6,6,6 plus SL 6,6,6)
These grades must include HL in Chemistry and one of Biology, Mathematics or Physics. If not passed at HL, applicants must have SL in Biology, Mathematics and English.

Either Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches or Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation are accepted as meeting the Mathematics requirement. Standard Level Mathematics Studies is not acceptable. Mathematics at GCSE grade B or better might be considered in lieu of Standard Level.

Applicants who use English as an additional language must achieve 7 in all four components of the International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) exam, to be taken at one sitting.
