According to the latest Research Excellence Framework (REF 2021), we achieved 6th place nationally and tied for first in demonstrating the practical impact of our research
Students can pursue their own research initiatives with guidance from academic advisors. Alongside personalized supervision, weekly postgraduate seminars provide forums to present and critique work. Our Skills Development Training Programme enhances both research capabilities and career readiness. The department organizes various academic activities including reading groups, guest lectures, workshops, conferences, and specialized classes. We've previously welcomed major philosophy conferences like the British Society for Ethical Theory, British Postgraduate Philosophical Association, British Wittgenstein Society, and British Society for Aesthetics graduate events. Active participation in these events is encouraged. Postgraduate enrollment includes membership in our humanities graduate school, offering extra resources, funding connections, student-run initiatives, and networking opportunities.
Career prospects are diverse and extensive. A PhD serves as strong preparation for academia while developing versatile skills applicable to teaching, arts management, journalism, and government roles at various levels.
