The University of Sheffield's Russian and Slavonic Studies program boasts an internationally renowned research profile spanning linguistics and broader cultural studies. Our department excels in Russian intellectual and cultural history, with specialized focus on the Soviet era. In literary studies, Sheffield faculty have produced extensive publications on Russian literature and theory, with notable expertise in Soviet Literary Theory (Brandist and Dobrenko), Modernism, Avant-Garde movements, Socialist Realism, and post-Soviet cultural production. Our linguistic research employs usage-based approaches, analyzing language acquisition through real-world usage patterns and cognitive generalizations. This work utilizes large text corpora and experimental methods to develop and validate linguistic hypotheses (see Acceptability and Forced-Choice Judgements).
