Biomechanics represents a swiftly advancing research focus within the Department, mirroring the increasing number of mechanical engineers working at the intersection of engineering and life sciences. A significant portion of Biomechanics research in Mechanical Engineering centers on computational simulations of human anatomy and physiological processes. Current initiatives, stemming from the EPSRC-funded Frontier research project MultiSim, concentrate on multi-scale modeling of the neuromusculoskeletal system to support investigations into various conditions such as osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, and sarcopenia. Another crucial research domain involves mechanobiology, which explores cellular and tissue mechanical properties, specifically how mechanical forces influence biological responses.
