During this program, you'll apply your astrophysics expertise through a professional placement, gaining valuable experience to enhance your CV. Our astrophysics students have secured placements at prestigious institutions like the Isaac Newton Group of Telescopes in the Canary Islands and the Thai National Observatory.
While studying in Sheffield, half your time will be dedicated to astrophysics modules, giving our program greater depth in this field than most. Our facility features two rooftop telescopes that you'll learn to operate starting in your first year. Additionally, we maintain a telescope on La Palma in the Canary Islands, which students utilize during our yearly field excursion.
Your studies will begin with core physics concepts - including heat, motion, electromagnetism, and quantum mechanics - delivered through lectures and laboratory sessions. You'll simultaneously explore astronomical fundamentals through modules examining our solar system, stellar phenomena, galactic structures, and cosmological principles. Practical training includes telescope operation and programming classes that develop skills crucial to contemporary astrophysics and applicable to various careers, from data analysis to software development.
