This program blending linguistics with modern languages and cultures will expand your comprehension of language mechanics. You'll explore language structure while simultaneously using these insights in your learning of one or two contemporary foreign languages.

Examine language systems and utilize your understanding through selecting either a single or dual foreign language study - enriching your knowledge by investigating the history, literature and cultural context of these languages.

Dividing your studies between the School of English and the School of Languages and Cultures provides diverse academic opportunities. With English, select from courses like first and second language acquisition, linguistic theory, gender and language, and dialect studies. The Languages and Cultures program offers subjects including visual arts, literary analysis, post-colonial studies and cinema. Paired with an international year, you'll graduate as a worldly professional with global career prospects.
Merge linguistics with one or two languages - select from 10 options (German, French, Russian, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, Czech, Catalan, Italian, and Luxembourgish) to broaden your language expertise.
Learn from leading experts - we rank 4th in the UK for linguistics (The Complete University Guide 2023).
International year - your third year abroad allows complete immersion in the language, culture and society of your chosen language(s).
